The estimated results of the PROBIOMA project can be grouped into different scales of action:

1.General. Promotion of scientific excellence in research centers and universities in the Cross-Border Cooperation Area. The project will encourage partners to reach a level of international excellence in their areas of activity, drawing on the results of research and development in the most influential scientific-technological domains, such as Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, which will be enriched by the design of new products (CBA) and processes. The cooperation, within this project, will allow to increase the critical mass of the beneficiaries and their competitiveness, as well as to have access to technologies and scientific tasks in which some partners are more specialized than others, thus establishing the appropriate synergies and improving the scientific capacities of each group and its components.

2. Scientist. In the scientific aspect, PROBIOMA will provide results in several fields of science: Knowledge of the biodiversity of mines and caves of Alentejo, Algarve and Western Andalusia. Isolation of bacteria and fungi to be described as new species for the science. Investigation of the potential of the isolated microorganisms for the production of CBA of interest for the medicine, agriculture and the environment. Small-scale demonstration of the possible benefit of CBAs.

3. Regional. The project aims to boost and value a part of the excellent Industrial Archeological Heritage, nowadays abandoned, in the Huelva area of the IPB, designing ecotourism and industrial archeology itineraries, which will be made available to the town councils in the area. In addition, the project will assess the Escoural Cave in Alentejo and the Algarve caves from a tourist and heritage point of view, reinforcing and improving visitors’ visits and experience.

4. Social. PROBIOMA can help create jobs in the areas where the mines of the IPB in Alentejo and Andalusia are located, and the Algarve caves, for later implementation (for example, creation of local cooperatives for transport and guide of tourists to the areas involved in the itineraries designed by the project in the IPB area, environmental education (dissemination in schools of the industrial past of mining and its effect in the region), etc.
